PAUL CROWLEY The death has taken place at his home in Newport of Paul Crowley, the man who was the driving force behind the twinning of Kinsale and the Rhode Island resort. Aged 57, he had served in the State’s House of Representatives since 1981 and earned special recognition in the area of education, becoming synonymous with the Rhode Island Student Investment Initiative, popularly known as Article 31, the section of State law requiring accountability by teachers and setting performance standards for students. Besides education, Paul Crowley also made his mark in the area of tourism. He was the first chairman of the then Newport County Tourism and Convention Authority - now the Newport County Convention and Visitors Bureau - and was one of the primary proponents of cruise ship and meals taxes, which bring in nearly $2 million a year in local taxes. His interest in Kinsale came from his family’s West Cork links and his great interest in Irish history and culture which resulted in the establishment, thirty years ago, along with Rick O’Neill and Rick Kelly, of the Newport Irish Heritage Commission, which runs a month of Irish cultural events each March. | ||
